The Qi of Sex

The Qi Of Sex

Can sex make you sick? Or healthier? The traditional Chinese physicians of yore not only knew that but were also amongst the first to study sexuality as a possible cause and remedy for illness. Ancient Chinese tradition has used sex as a powerful healing modality.

Let’s talk about this “forbidden” topic then because, to put it simply, it’s no longer forbidden. Times have changed and people are more comfortable with this subject as part of health and wellness treatment conversations.

Why Consider Sex At All?

Because sex came first! It was the first modality used, before needles made of bone and herbs, to move and generate Qi and blood. Archaeological evidence documents that the sexual healing arts are more than 3,000 years older than acupuncture and the use of herbs as a predominant form of medicine.

Fast forward to the present day and the way you have sex, or don’t, plays a role in our health.

How Does Sex Effect Qi?

The sexual act generates Qi through the friction of touch. Locations on the genitals correlate to different organs, so one can manipulate or build Qi in individual organs with different positions and stimulations. The resulting Qi can be directed or stored, used to heal illness or enhance stamina and longevity.

Key Points To Consider

Here are some basic directives of the sexual healing arts. Even if you know nothing else about the sex as a healing modality, these should be the basic rule of thumbs:

  • Sex is to be avoided after acupuncture or any other subtle body energy work like Reiki, Gua Sha, Tui Na, etc for at least 6 hours because sex redirects energy in the body. After such treatments, the resulting energetic movement needs time to optimise treatment results. This is also why eating or consuming alcohol is not suggested after treatments. Sex is also to be avoided immediately prior to such treatments because it has such a strong effect on the Qi that it can effect the accuracy of TCM diagnostics.
  • Sex is to be avoided when tired, even if you feel drawn to it. Very often sexual desire when fatigued is a sign that the kidneys need rest. They speak by using sexual desire to say, “I need nourishment”, because when done properly, sex can generate Qi and nourish the water element. Many people masturbate right before they go to sleep as it is a relaxing activity. If you are Qi or blood deficient, this is not advisable because it can further weaken you.

Not easy? Definitely! But it’s definitely worth trying.

  • If you are “servicing” your partner sexually but aren’t fully and enthusiastically engaged, this can create disharmony in the flow of Qi and blood in and around the genitals. Any number of urologic, gynaecologic and prostatic problems can result.Consider the ratio of time you are truly present in the sexual act and the ratio of time you are pushing yourself out, while respecting you partner’s needs.

There is a direct correlation between our sex lives and our health. Being mindful and involved is part of a holistic health regimen that will help put our body, mind and soul in a more optimal balance.
